A large part of childhood memories of today's adults is dominated by grandparents and their fairytales, bed time stories and gentle playful times. In today's world, these softer emotions are being replaced by television, video games, mobiles and computers.

In a bid to bring back the playful time with grandparents, kid's channel Nickelodeon celebrated Grandparents' Day on September 8 at Phoenix Mills in Mumbai, organising various activities such as painting, karaoke, dancing and games like housie, cooking contest and reading challenges to be played together by kids and their grandparents.

One of the games was to clean rice from an equal mixture of rice and wheat. A handful of this mixture was given in a bowl to each participant. The player picking the maximum number of rice grains in one minute was the winner.

In a bubble-popping game, soap bubbles were made by the grandparent and the grandchild had to pop them. The maximum number of soap bubbles made and popped decided the winner.

In addition, grandparents were asked to match their singing talents with each other in a karaoke setup. Also, grandparents could narrate stories to a larger audience on a platform. During 'Dedication Hour', to make grandparents feel special, children could dedicate songs to them. A singer cum guitarist was arranged to sing the song live.

Kids also danced with their grandparents to retro and contemporary songs; dance workshops of Rock and Roll, Jive and Salsa were conducted in the evening.

The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants was present to give away some special goodies and Nickelodeon merchandise.

Nina Elavia Jaipuria, executive vice-president and business head, Sonic and Nickelodeon India, says, "This is an attempt to bring together children and grandparents and nurture their relationships. We tend to influence them as somewhere the kids have forgotten to spend time with their grandparents. The activation is all about engaging with kids outside the television and imbibing traditional values."
