Shekhar Gupta, editor-in-chief of Indian Express Newspapers, has resigned from the group. Gupta is serving his notice period and will be with the group till June 15.

This was Gupta's second stint at The Indian Express and he has altogether worked with the group for 25 years. His second stint was for 19 years.

"I have been doubly blessed. I started at the same paper as a reporter in 1977 and worked here for a full 25 years in two innings. It is time for me to say goodbyes at the Express - for the second time. The first was exactly at the same time of the year in 1983," Gupta wrote in an email to his colleagues.

"There isn't a daily newspaper in India greater than the Express. Or a greater gift that a journalist can ask for than to lead it," he has said in his email.

Gupta has been credited for several accolades won by the Indian Express Group. Under his leadership, The Indian Express won the Vienna-based International Press Institute's Award for Outstanding Journalism in the Public Interest thrice - the first time for its coverage of the Gujarat riots of 2002, the second time for uncovering the Bihar flood relief scam in 2005 and the third time for its sustained investigation into the Malegaon and Modasa blasts of 2008 and the alleged role of Hindu extremists and organisations.

Gupta has received assorted awards that include the 1985 Inlaks award for Young Journalist of the Year, G K Reddy Award for Journalism, and the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award for National Integration. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan by the Govt. of India in 2009.
