Prakash Javadekar has been appointed as the new Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting (independent charge). In addition to this, he has also been appointed as Minister of State (independent charge) for the Environment Ministry.

Javadekar, official spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party and an MP (Rajya Sabha), takes over charge of the I&B Ministry from Manish Tewari, who took over the responsibility in October, 2012.

Born on January 30, 1951, Javadekar studied B.Com from Pune.

He has, since his student says, been associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

He worked with Bank of Maharashtra for 10 years (1971-1981). He also worked in the Rural Development Department (Sick Unit Cell) and Employment Promotion Programme of the bank. In 1981, he started working with BJP. Later, in 1990, he was elected to be a part of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, and served from the Pune Division Graduate Constituency for 12 years.

He was also the executive president of the State Planning Board of Maharashtra from 1995-1999. He worked as chairman of the Task Force (IT) for the Govt. of Maharashtra from 1977-1999 and was appointed as chairman of the Working Group (IT for Masses) for the Govt. of India in 2000.

In the early years of his career, Javadekar worked as joint editor of Kesari, a Marathi daily started by Lokmanya Tilak. He also worked for newspapers such as Tarun Bharat and Kaal as a journalist.
