The Economist has announced that Suprio Guha Thakurta, managing director, India, will take additional charge as circulation managing director, Asia Pacific. He will take on the new role as the head of the publication's Asia-Pacific circulation business from April 1.

Guha Thakurta has been with the publication for more than five years (since December, 2007). Before he became managing director, he was associate publisher of The Economist. "The scope of this job is very large. I have to look at 40 countries and get an idea about what's happening where, and balance print and digital businesses to keep it going," he says.

The media company has decided to split the management of the circulation business in the APAC region into Asia ex-India and India. In an official statement, Tim Pinnegar, publisher and managing director, Asia Pacific, The Economist Group, says, "In order to benefit the evaluation of new audiences and the allocation of marketing investment, I have decided to bring together the two circulation businesses under one head. We aim to maintain a strong print circulation in Asia. The migration to digital reading is picking up pace and we plan to create opportunities to reach new audiences and alter our production and distribution costs. Suprio's strategic skills will be a powerful additive to an already very profitable circulation business in Asia."

Guha Thakurta has also been associated with Lintas Personal for three years as president, and Godrej and Boyce as regional sales manager.

For the record, The Economist is a current affairs publication which covers politics, business, science and technology, books and arts.
