The Times of India will soon enter Kerala. In anticipation, major English newspapers of the region, including The Hindu, are sprucing up efforts to tackle the competition. The Hindu is all set to launch its third edition in the state by mid-January, 2012.
The new edition will be launched in Kozhikode. According to sources close to the development, the group is in the process of setting up a new printing facility in the city. Currently, The Hindu serves the northern Kerala region from its printing centres at Kochi, Coimbatore and Mangalore.
The new edition will also cater to the neighbouring districts of Kozhikode including Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod.
Apart from this, in order to strengthen its foothold in the North, the group recently introduced a printing facility in Mohali. Earlier, The Hindu catered to the entire northern region from its Wazirpur printing facility in Delhi. The Hindu publishes two editions from this facility -- one for the city of Delhi, and the second one for other northern cities.
The new printing facility in Mohali will serve the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, as well as the Jammu region. The group will also introduce more colour pages for these areas.
The Hindu was started in 1878 as a weekly; in 1889, it turned into a daily newspaper. It is printed from 13 centres including Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Madurai, New Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Vijayawada, Mangalore, Tiruchirapalli, Kolkata, and Mohali.
