Yahoo! India has partnered with the Marathi newspaper Lokmat, to launch a Marathi content destination, Lokmat.yahoo.com. In an official statement, the internet company states that Yahoo! will offer Lokmat's original content, combined with Yahoo!'s premium content experience, to online Marathi users. Marathi being the fourth largest-spoken language in India, the partnership is a crucial step towards satisfying the digital content appetite in the language of users' choice, it adds.
Yahoo! India claims that it plans to launch six language websites in India. It already has two partnerships in the regional content space. It has a tie up with the Jagran Group (In.jagran.yahoo.com) for its Hindi content. In July, it tied up with the Tamil newspaper, Dinamalar, to launch a co-branded Tamil news site (available at tamil.yahoo.com).
Arun Tadanki, managing director, Yahoo! India, says, "At Yahoo!, we aim to make our content relevant for new internet users, who come from different parts of India. With this association, we aim to expand our existing offering to help Marathi users stay connected to their world in their own language."
Rishi Darda, joint managing director, Lokmat, says, "Our partnership will help grow the regional language online audience in India. Yahoo!'s scale and Lokmat's original content, with in-depth coverage of Maharashtra, will deliver uniquely-tailored Marathi language content to the users."
