D&AD has four sets of awards including Professional, Next, New Blood, and Impact. D&AD and its members represent the creative, design, and advertising communities worldwide. As a non-profit advertising association, all D&AD's surpluses go to programmes such as New Blood, to inspire the next generation of creative talent and stimulate the creative industry to work towards a fairer and more sustainable future.

The Awards were started in 1962 by a group of designers and art directors who came together to celebrate creative communications and raise the standards within their industry. The group called itself British Design & Art Direction, and went on to organise the first Awards event the following year.
