Michael Kyle, a loving husband and modern-day patriarch who rules his household with a unique and distinct parenting style. As he teaches his three children some of life's lessons, he does so with his own brand of wisdom, discipline and humor.

The series is premised on a self-made merchant, Michael Richard Kyle, who owns a trucking company and brings up his family in the suburbs of Stamford, Connecticut. He is married to Janet Kyle, typically referred to as "Jay" (Tisha Campbell), who had been a housewife but joined the workforce in the pilot (but decided to become a homemaker once again after she was fired from her job in the season two episode "Jay Gets Fired"). Janet, Michael's wife, maintains a fine balance between taking care of their home, building her career and trading punch lines with her husband.

Michael and Jay have three children who are high school student: Michael Kyle, Jr., who is a regular recipient of his father's witty, disciplinary ways usually called simply "Junior" (George O. Gore II), their underachieving and not-very-bright son and oldest child who Michael and Jay had when they both were 17-years-old; their moody, adolescent daughter, Claire (Jazz Raycole, later Jennifer Freeman) whose favorite hobby is asking Dad for money, their oldest daughter and middle child who is a typical teenager that is often self-absorbed, and clumsy; and precious youngest six-year-old child Kady (Parker McKenna Posey) who rarely lets Daddy have the last word. She usually ruins Michael's plans or deals.

In the first episode of season 2, when the Kyles travel to Hawaii for vacation, patriarch Michael discovers that, despite his best efforts, taking the wife and kids away is not without its trials and tribulations.

While Michael and Janet think they are being pursued by the extremely attractive Hunter (Tyson C. Beckford) and Veronica (Nicole Scherzinger), Jr. finds his first true love and Claire and Kady go on a room service spending spree.

The Kyles are excited about taking a family vacation in Hawaii. But challenges arise before the family even leaves home. Michael tells Janet she's packed enough to enter a witness protection program and he disapproves of Claire's flossy bikini. Young Kady won't leave home without her beloved doll, Little Pippy, and Jr., for his part, on a quest to pick up girls, tells his Dad that all he'll need in Hawaii are tank tops and condoms. Meanwhile everyone is miffed at Michael who, in order to save money, has booked several layovers, so that it will take 43 hours for them to get to Hawaii.

Once in Hawaii, things don't go much better. Michael has lost both his suitcase and his original hotel reservation, and so has to put the family up in a lavish suite at The Royal Hawaiian hotel. He hopes to get the vacation started on a romantic note, but Janet has other plans - much to everyone's chagrin - insisting on taking the family on an educational sightseeing tour, instead of spending sun-filled days relaxing on a beach. At a luau, Jr. is thrilled to meet the island girl of his dreams, Leilani; attired in his "tropical seduction suit," he is ready for his much-anticipated date with her. He confides that he feels she's the girl he's been waiting for to Michael, who reminds his son to act responsibly. Meanwhile, Claire is admonished for her skimpy beach wear and told to buy something more suitable and charge it - so she goes on a shopping spree! And Michael and Janet each have the feeling they're being pursued - Michael by Veronica, a lingerie model he met on the plane, Janet by the stunningly handsome Hunter - but to what end?
