The globally recognized WISE award for Nanhi Kali comes close on the heels of the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ and is an apt recognition of Mahindra’s project that has benefited over 50,000 socially and economically disadvantaged girl children till date.
Project Nanhi Kali, (which is jointly managed by the K C Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation aims to provide 10 years of continuous and quality education to the underprivileged girl child in India) was honoured with the WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) Award 2009 by the Qatar Foundation. WISE Awards 2009 aim to recognise and celebrate outstanding practice and achievements within the themes of Pluralism, Sustainability and Innovation in education. Project Nanhi Kali will receive this recognition for the “Pluralism” theme. The ‘Pluralism theme’ looks for educational activities that explicitly generate greater respect and understanding between communities, enhance diversity, or increase access and equality to education.
Sheetal Mehta is one of six laureates who will be honoured on behalf of Nanhi Kali at the first ever World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).
Speaking on the occasion, Ms Sheetal Mehta, Trustee and Executive Director, K. C. Mahindra Education Trust said “Project Nanhi Kali is the flagship project of the Trust and we are delighted and honored to have received this recognition from the Qatar Foundation. Our goal is to empower girls through education. We are currently sponsoring the education for 51,503 Nanhi Kalis and aim to reach out to 1, 00,000 girls by 2010.”
